Expert Answer and Explanation
IOM Report
The nature of healthcare in the US is regulated by policies at the federal and state level. The IOM Future of Nursing report is one of the products of these policies that is centered on examining the nursing workforce and providing nurses with better opportunities for growth (Institute of Medicine, 2016). This essay discusses the different actions of the foundation behind the report, as well as the barriers that hinder the barriers to advancement of proposed initiatives in the State of Florida.
Work of the RWJF Committee that Yielded the Report
The Robert-Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is a philanthropic organization based in the US established in 1972 to help Americans overcome some of their major healthcare challenges (Adams, Campbell, & Deming, 2017). In 2008, RWJF proposed a partnership with the Institute of Medicine, which was believed to be a cause of major transformation to nursing (Adams, Campbell, & Deming, 2017). Part of the proposal highlighted some of the challenges that the different Stakeholders in the Nursing Profession experience, and these were to be major hindrances to fulfilling the health needs of the Nation (Campbell et al., 2017). In response to these challenges, the RWJF, in partnership with the IOM, launched the Box S-1 Committee to produce a comprehensive report that would give some action-oriented recommendations for the changes that were necessary at the national, local, and state levels (Adams, Campbell, & Deming, 2017). Specifically, this committee did an examination of the present nursing workforce and highlighted some of the possibilities for expansion of the entire nursing industry. There was a better design of the technology in the industry, better placement to curb nursing shortage, as well as the emphasis of the positive roles of nurses in society.
Key Messages Structuring the Recommendations
One of the four key messages in the IOM report recommendations was the allowance for nurses to practice their training in full. Second in the recommendations is the improvement of the system of health education to guide in the achievement of higher education among healthcare givers, as well as promote a well-established system of academic progression among nurses. The third recommendation produced by the report is proper participation of nurses in healthcare by making them significant partners with doctors and physicians. Lastly, the IOM future of nursing report recommended an improvement of data collection and infrastructure using effective policy development and workforce planning.
State-Based Coalitions
Implementation of the IOM recommendations would not be possible without the help of state-based coalitions, which to spread the campaign at the local levels. Some of the State Action Coalitions such as that of NJ, NY, Michigan, California, and Mississippi were formed within a year of the launch of the campaign (Hassmiller et al., 2020). The state coalitions also serve as a primary tool for tracking the progress of implementation of the recommendations.
Initiatives for my State’s Action Coalition
The Initiatives
The Florida Action Coalition, also called FL-AC, has several initiatives that help in the implementation of the IOM recommendations. For example, it advocates for the collaboration of different stakeholders in the healthcare continuum. The FL-AC brings the ideas of groups such as AARP Florida, philanthropists, nurse educators, physician groups, and business groups together so that they can face the societal issues with one accord (Hossli, Start, & Murphy, 2018). Also, besides tracking the progress of implementation, the FL-AC helps to launch cost-minimization campaigns while still maintaining the right healthcare qualities and standards of healthcare.
How the Initiatives Help Advance the Profession of Nursing
The initiatives help to reduce negative competition among different healthcare givers, which could otherwise affect their ability to produce proper results. Also, they help to develop positive technology measures that encourage proper nursing training and development (Hossli, Start, & Murphy, 2018). Through the initiatives, nurses become more prepared to implement health informatics elements such as electronic health records in the care continuum. Lastly, nurses have a chance to be more independent through some of the recommendations established.
Barriers to Advancement
Like in any other field, nurses are always resistant in implementing new and modern techniques in healthcare. The traditional care operations, despite being less effective are often more comfortable for experienced nurses, and this may make them reluctant in absorbing the new technologies (Polansky et al., 2019). This barrier can be overcome by introducing procedural implementation, where the nurses are allowed to use some of these ancient techniques while some others are dismissed. For instance, using patient charts can be replaced with electronic health records but the use of telehealth solutions withheld until the first technology is made a norm (Polansky et al., 2019). Another way of overcoming this barrier is providing the relevant education to nurses that help them appreciate these changes. Another barrier is the lack of collaboration between nurses and other staff due to existing strains. Such a challenge can be solved by improving the terms of collaboration as well as education.
Conclusion
The IOM future of nursing recommendations have played a primary role in advancing the ability of nurses to provide improved care. The Florida State Action Coalition is one of the pillars of implementation of the IOM future of nursing reports. Among the barriers that are encountered in the execution of the recommendation is the resistance to change and collaboration, which can be corrected by using relevant education as well as using other techniques.
