Expert Answer and Explanation
Assisting a Student with ADHD
Dear Mr. John Doe,
It is unfortunate that you have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and while this disorder can hamper your educational goals, you can still manage to increase your prospects of succeeding in your class work. It is imperative that you understand that ADHD is a medical issue that results from a brain activity which causes one to experience restlessness. Various factors can alter one’s brain activity, and developmental disorder is a major contributor of the ADHD cases. Still, exposure to lead as well as other toxic chemicals can cause the alterations in the brain activity, and this can increase their chances of developing the ADHD. Additionally, a child is at risk of developing this condition if their parent, while pregnant, uses psychotic substances (Gehricke et al., 2017). Therefore, it is important that you should understand the relationship between the brain and the ADHD, with particular focus on how the brain perceives information, and the impact of the same on academic performance.
Brain plays a crucial role in helping one become attentive, and the impairment within certain sections of the brain can cause the ADHD. The brain’s frontal cortex is one of the structures linked to this medical condition considering that this structure is responsible for controlling the attention. Limbic System is also involved in the ADHD given that it functions as a regulator of the attention as well as emotions. Any alteration of this structure can negate the structure’s activity. The Basal Ganglia is another structure which can determine whether one becomes attentive or sustains attention. With impairment in this area, the interruption of the communication within the brain occurs, and this consequently causes the loss of the attention (Tynget al., 2017). The brain’s Reticular Activating System is responsible for relaying of the information, and in any case an issue occurs in this area, an individual becomes inattentive.
Emotions play critical roles in terms of affecting one’s attentiveness and bio-psychosocial factors can alter these emotions, and consequently exacerbate the effects of the ADHD. The brain’s amygdala plays a crucial role in the emotions. This structure coordinates the response reactions to one’s environment, and it may cause anger or fear. When one experiences fear, it can be difficult for them to recall whatever they learn. The limbic cortex also impacts emotions, and it any negative response in this area can cause undesirable impact on one’s motivation (Ferri & Ferri, 2019). Hippocampus, as a trigger of emotions, can impact an individual’s capacity to remember ideas, experiences and information.
It is important that you know how the human brain perceive information from one’s own surroundings. Whenever a factor within one’s environment causes trigger on their sensory organs, the organs produce stimuli and convert the same into electro-chemical signal. The brain processes and internalizes this signal in a manner that allows for comprehension. Any factor within one’s own surrounding can affect how the brain processes and internalizes this information (Tolan & Leventhal, 2013).
Although the ADHD may affect how you learn, you need to take certain measures so that you can have a higher chance of succeeding in your studies. Note-taking during lectures can help you focus during lessons. It is also important to create time in between lessons, and play during these lesson breaks. It is also important that you ask questions during lessons so that the teacher can clarify points, concepts or ideas. The essence is to improve your participation in class activities.
