What obstacles could challenge this plan and what steps will you take to minimize their impact?
Discuss why EBP is an essential component of the practice of a BSN-prepared RN. Identify two ways in which you will continue to integrate evidence into your practice and encourage it within your work environment. What obstacles could challenge this plan, and what steps will you take to minimize their impact?
Expert Answer and Explanation
Opportunities and Barriers for EBP Integration
Currently, there are growing emphasis for the health care practitioners to adopt evidence-based practice (EBP). Specifically, there is focus on the nurse prepared at the level of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) to meet the rising health care challenges. A BSN nurse is in possession of the skills needed for the development and the application of the evidence. This program equips nurses with the research-based skills, and using these skills, they can develop and interpret research studies, and apply the same in managing clinical issues. Thus, the EBP is a critical component of the practice of a Registered Nurse (RN) with BSN because nurses working within this role have to make clinical decisions which are pertinent to the delivery of the care that is guided by the research-based findings (Li, Cao, & Zhu, 2019).
As a RN with BSN, I would pursue certain key approaches to integrate evidence into practice. For example, I would focus on reviewing and applying the research-based findings to help guide clinical decisions. This is because for one to effectively apply evidence, they need to understand what the evidence dictates is the appropriate intervention for a clinical issue. Part of the strategy I would also use to integrate evidence is creating the records of the efficacy of the various interventions (Khammarnia et al., 2015).
When implementing evidence, a nurse may encounter various challenges. The heavy workload is a problem that they face during the EBP integration. This problem makes it difficult for the nurse to effectively apply evidence to each patient situation. To address this problem, hospitals should focus on proper staffing so that the patient-provider ratio is favorable enough. The lack of enough materials to guide EBP is also a challenge (Mathieson, Grande, & Luker, 2019). Solution to this challenge is to expand the search over various databases.
