As an advanced practice nurse, you will run into situations where a patient’s wishes about his or her health conflict with evidence, your own experience, or a family’s wishes. This may create an ethical dilemma. What do you do when these situations occur?
In this Lab Assignment, you will explore evidence-based practice guidelines and ethical considerations for specific scenarios.

EXPERT ANSWER AND EXPLANATION
Lab Assignment: Ethical Concerns
Health Assessment and Diagnostic Tests
The key assessment information that will be required for the diagnosis of the two patients is the chief complaint. This information often illustrates why the patient has come to the hospital. In this case, the two patients have come for pelvic examination and receiving the birth control treatment. The nurse should also collect the personal and medical history of the two patients. When collecting personal history data, the nurse should focus on their social life, especially sex life. A medical history will include data, such as previous diseases, medications, hospitalization records, and family health history (Schmitz et al. 2020). The nurse should also gather information about the patients’ orthopaedic health. Here, the caregiver should assess the patients’ pelvic area, conduct gait analysis, a good posture screen, and spinal movement analysis (Alzahrani, Bajammal, Alghamdi, Taha, and Ratnapalan, 2018). Information about myofascial tension will also help during diagnosis. Information about diagnostic tests should also be collected.
Responding to Ethical Dilemmas
As an advanced practice nurse, I would educate the patients’ parent about birth control care before putting the girls under birth control. Education will help the patients understand both the advantages and disadvantages of birth control. The aim of providing the patient with education to improve her knowledge about birth control and enable her to make an informed decision. However, I will ask for the mother’s consent before providing education to her and her girls. Another ethical consideration that will guide my practice in this scenario is autonomy (Resnik, MacDougall, & Smith, 2018). Autonomy is an ethical principle and allows patients to decide the type of treatment they want. In this case, the girls are underage and cannot decide for themselves or give consent. However, their mother is legally allowed to decide for them. Therefore, I will provide care as requested by the mother.
