Expert Answer and Explanation
Maintaining Academic Integrity
Avoiding Plagiarism
It is easy to locate data for most nursing research topics and issues. However, is it not always easy to incorporate the found information into ones’ paper without being detected for plagiarism. Plagiarism is one of the academic integrity issues that nurses have to avoid. According to Dhammi and Haq (2016), plagiarism can be avoided easily through the following methods.
The first way of avoiding plagiarism is by paraphrasing a researched work. After founding information that suits specific research, one should read the data and write it in his or her own words. The researcher should not copy three words in a row from the same sentence into his or her work. The second way of avoiding plagiarism is to cite the researched work. Citing is the process of acknowledging other people’s work by including their names in a research paper. Nurses can use different citation styles to cite their work. The styles include APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago, and Turabian.
Generally, citing is done by including the author’s name, year of the publication of the research work, and the page number where the work was extracted. The third way of avoiding plagiarism is by citing quotes. The nursing students should always reference their quotes by telling the readers where they got the information. Fourth, plagiarism can also be avoided by citing one’s materials. Researchers should always cite their previous work in case they have used it in the current paper. If they do not cite their work, they will be detected for plagiarism. Third, plagiarism can be avoided by referring to the research paper. Referencing is including reference paper, list of references, or works cited page that lists the works of other authors in the paper.
Paraphrasing and Synthesizing Professional Literature
Paraphrasing is a way of presenting a research text by changing words of an original sentence to make it look structurally different while maintaining its initial meaning. Paraphrasing can be done by using synonyms and changing the structure of the initial sentence. Paraphrasing can be used to improve the scholar-practitioner practice of nurses in many ways (Juyal et al., 2015). First, the strategy can help nurses avoid plagiarism. Plagiarizing other people’s work in nursing is a serious crime can land nurse scholars in serious trouble. Second, paraphrasing can improve nurses’ knowledge of different research issues around the globe. When paraphrasing, one is required to read and understand the initial message before rephrasing it to another sentence structure, and this can improve nurse scholars’ understanding of nursing issues.
The success of any hospital depends on many factors in which originality is of great significance. The nurses can help in keeping the originality of hospital materials by paraphrasing. According to Adhikari (2018), originality can be achieved by reading other people’s work, and writing it uniquely so that they can be different from the original materials. Lastly, paraphrasing can help nurses in the research industry to convey their ideas without any trouble.
In conclusion, plagiarism can be avoided in the following ways. First, it can be avoided by citing the work, referencing the research paper, paraphrasing, citing the quotes, and lastly citing one’s work. Paraphrasing can help strengthen nurse scholar-practitioner practice by making a nurse maintain originality, avoid plagiarism, and improving their knowledge in research.
