Over time, the nursing profession has witnessed a major change in functionality, operations, and scope of practice. These changes can be attribute to the changing dynamics of health care as well as the complexity of diseases and illnesses (Krepia et al., 2018). A nurse must ensure that they conform to these changes leading to diverse application of nursing services and changing the outlook of the nursing industry as a whole.
The Evolution of Nursing Practice
The nursing industry is one of the rapidly changing over time leading to the massive scale of practice and additional complexities of care. The key function of a nurse is to offer medical health care services to patients until they recover or regain the ability to be self-dependent. With the changes in the nursing industry, the attribute of care provider is still maintained but the nursing profession has been categorized into different subgroups depending on one’s specialty (Krepia et al., 2018). The nursing industry of the past was mainly focused on the provision of care and attention for patients and was obligated to women who were considered to be caring and empathetic. The nurses in the past did not have any form of education of training as their tasks did not require professional conduct but the ability to take care of the patient in terms of administering prescribed medication, providing food and ensure the patient needs are met, and notifying the doctor if the condition persists. The informal nature of contemporary nursing did not have an elaborate structure of seniority or governance.
With the advancement in technology and the complexity of illnesses and disease, there was a need to shift from the rudimentary nursing education to a more formal and organized model of nursing education. The changes created a foundation for modern-day nursing which depends on a highly-skilled professional with a key understanding of the medical world and how it should be conducted to improve the satisfaction of the patient. Based on the current era, burses have to attain education, practical knowledge, and basic medical expertise that are specific to their major or specialization (Krepia et al., 2018). Nursing has also become more mainstream with the industry having various nursing programs, certifications, and specialization. Nurses have to complete formal education, pursue an intensive nursing training that will equip them with the knowledge to practice in their respective specialization. Nurses are informed not only on the provision of quality care, but also the need to understanding technologies, leadership strategies, being good advocates, and incorporating spirituality in care.
ADN and BSN Practice Competencies
Nurses have different scopes of practice, roles, and positions depending on the level of education attained by the nurse. More complex roles and positions are given to more advanced nurses with better skills and expertise to make essential decisions and functional operations. For instance, the practice models between holders of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) tend to differ while in practice (Jeffreys, 2020). The ADN educational training is limited to 2 years where the nurses are taught on care and dealing with patients at the bedside. Their roles are mainly to offer care and report to the supervising physician on any complications required. ADN nurses are more of technical assistants and accountability for patient’s recovery. As an ADN the main functions include the offering of proper planning, medical care, and implementation of effective patient care throughout the stay of the patient at the facility (Jeffreys, 2020). Concerning the BSN, the training takes four years and besides patient care, it is also focused on leadership styles, management, decision-making, and problem-solving within a healthcare organization.
BSN and ADN Decision-Making
While providing care for patients with cancer, there would be different models and approaches from BSN and ADN nurses (Jeffreys, 2020). For instance, and ADN nurse will make sure to follow the guidelines provided by the lead doctor, offer medication of pain management, and report the patient’s progress according to the policies. The model of decision-making for an ADN is predetermined and rules oriented (Mackey, & Bassendowski, 2017). Concerning a BSN, the decision to attend to the nurse will be based on nurse-patient interaction, incorporation of spirituality, and using evidence to offer holistic care.
Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing
EBP is significant to nursing practice as it offers a basis for informed decision-making strategies. Nurses can make use of EBP to identify patterns and evidence that can be used to offer medical intervention to a patient and improve their overall standpoint (Warren et al., 2016). As a nurse being informed on best practices is important for quality care dissemination. RN preparation supports EBP implementation by equipping nurses with the technological know-how and expertise to synthesize data and apply it in a practical world.
Communication and Collaboration
Interdisciplinary teams within a health care organization require them to communicate and effectively collaborate. Today, nurses make use of technology to facilitate collaboration and communication (Tuckson, Edmunds, & Hodgkins, 2017). For instance, the use of forums, telehealth technology, and EMR systems is effective for interdisciplinary collaboration. The ability to offer real-time communication and assistance with other teams of medical professional aids providing safer and more effective patient outcomes.
Conclusion
The nursing profession has undergone numerous changes over time and it has created a platform within which modern medicine thrives. Nurses a more than just care providers but can also be included in leadership positions, and even policymaking. Nursing education has played a key role in the advancement and improved the perception of the nursing industry.
