Review the National Academy of Medicine's 2021 report, "The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity,"

Expert Answer and Explanation

Professional Development of Nursing Professionals

Professional development is the process in which the experts in a certain field engage in activities or processes that can further improve their purpose. The healthcare sector comprises different professionals with the nurse making up the vast majority of the professionals (Flaubert et al., 2021). It is important that nurses engage in continuous professional development as a means to better their service delivery and ensure their outcomes. The primary purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of health equity in accordance with the recommendations of the National Academy of Medicine and other components of health.

Recommendation of the National Academy of Medicine 2021

The recommendation by the National Academy of Medicine 2021 makes reference to the IOM report on the future of nursing published in 2011. The reports focus on the need to improve the nursing profession through education, inclusivity, and leadership. The National Academy of Medicine 2021 focuses on equity and how it can be used as a guiding force for the nursing profession and in the delivery of better outcomes. The first and most important recommendation from the report is that there is a need for nurses to create a shared agenda (Flaubert et al., 2021, p. 357). In order to attain equity and facilitate the progression of the nursing profession, there is a need for a common goal and process that all nurses can use to make informed decisions.

The other recommendation is the need to support nurses to advance health equity. Traditionally, nurses have had a restricted scope of practice which limited them in the delivery of care (Flaubert et al., 2021). However, more states are adopting independence for nurses which is critical in ensuring equity. The recommendations offer insights into the best ways that equity can be achieved within the nursing profession. Health equity is significant in the report as it ensures a means to create a common mode of intervention among the vast nursing profession.

Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)

Social determinants of health comprise non-medical elements that can have an impact on health outcomes. Social determinants of health are usually common in the areas where a person resides, works, or plays (Nutbeam & Lloyd, 2021). The five main social determinants of health include economic stability, education, environment, society, and healthcare. Of the five SDOHs, the main element that can be associated with health equity is economic stability.

For healthcare services to be equitable, they have to be affordable and accessible to all regardless of economic class (Nutbeam & Lloyd, 2021). However, many people are not financially stable which makes the economics of healthcare difficult to attain. However, the availability of funds in the healthcare sector can help ensure the availability of resources and professionals for equitable care.

Role of Nurses in Improving Health Equity

The scope of nurses is mainly based on offering bedside care to patients. However, there are instances when the nurse is required to provide holistic care to patients as a means to ensure health equity. Nurses can act as advocates to help ensure that patients are treated equally in the facility (Flaubert et al., 2021). A nurse can help raise issues and act as an intermediary between the patient and the top management to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to improve health equity. Nurses can also acquire feedback and recommendations from the patients on what the facility can improve to further increase their efficiency (Flaubert et al., 2021).

Using the available resources, nurses can also offer patient-centered care as a means of ensuring equity. Patient-centered care focuses on the subjective needs of a patient and improves their perception of equity. The processes can lead to better patient outcomes and increased satisfaction rates due to their ability to attain various social needs.

Significance of Self-Care

While nurses are at the center stage of offering holistic and patient-centered care, there are challenges and barriers to quality and equitable care. One of the main challenges is the issue of burnout due to high workloads and a shortage of nurses (Slatyer et al., 2018). However, the use of self-care strategies can help a nurse manage their time and create a balance between work and personal life including the need to rest and prepare for the next day.

Available self-care strategies that a nurse can use to maintain personal and spiritual health include getting sufficient breaks between shifts and ensuring to get a sufficient amount of sleep between shifts (Slatyer et al., 2018). These strategies would be efficient in reducing burnout and increasing concentration. Concerning spiritual health, nurses can focus on improving their understanding of spiritual requirements in times of need.

Conclusion

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the importance of health equity in accordance with the recommendations of the National Academy of Medicine and other components of health. Health equity is a fundamental aspect of life and appropriate resources need to be provided to enable nurses to attain the goal. The National Academy of Medicine 2021 offers various recommendations that can be used. The application of the social determinants of health can also be sued to help create the desired outcome.
