Trends and Issues in Today’s Healthcare

The outbreak of the covid-19 in 2020 in the United States (U.S.) revealed the deficiencies in the country’s healthcare system because the country responded poorly to the pandemic. Given the shortage of the healthcare workforce, and the lack of full protection of the nurses, the morale off the American health workers declined.

Accordingly, nurses resigned from their work in droves as the rates of infections kept on climbing, and this is supported by the recent statistical data which showed that one in five nurses quit. At the height of the pandemic, Americans also witnessed the health inequality because the pandemic significantly affected minorities (Nagorcka-Smith et al., 2022).

The experience of handling the pandemic, and witnessing the health inequality, informed the establishment of report, “The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.” It is important to explore the work that led to this report, and conduct analysis aimed at investigating the role of nurse in leading change, and the mandate of the State-Based Action Coalitions (SBACs).

The Work of the National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that led to the Report

The divide in access to the health services can be attributed to the limited availability of the nursing professionals, and limitations that limit the nurse Scope of Practice (SOP). These are some of the issues that informed the decision by the National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to develop their report, recommending solutions to address the health inequality (2021).

Part of the NASEM’s recommendations includes the involvement of the nurses in expanding access to care through delivering culturally competent care, and tailoring care to optimize the outcomes of clinical interventions (National Academics Press, 2022). NASEM further propose strategies to address the health inequity by emphasizing hiring of more nurses, prudent allocation of nurses, and increasing their diversity in terms of skills they possess.

The NASEM’s work also tackles the practice barriers nursing staff grapple with, and which hamper their capacity to deliver services to patients and communities in need of care. In the U.S., only 23 states allow nursing practitioners (NPs) to fully practice. This means that a nurse who wants to practice in the 27 other states can only diagnose and treat patients strictly under the supervision of a physician.

Acknowledging the impact of restriction on the patient, NASEM recommends the elimination of the restrictions that put nurses in position where they cannot help patients (National Academics Press, 2022). Other NASEM’s proposals include improving nursing education, and recognizing the important role of community nursing.

The Trend occurring in the Nursing Workforce and Nursing Education is adapting to meet the Evolving Needs of the Profession

The evolving patients’ needs require the adaptation of the nursing workforce to help meet these needs. The need for quality care is growing considering that better quality care translates to better use of the medical resources. To adapt to this particular trend, nurses are pursuing career advancement opportunities with more nurses opting to get baccalaureate degrees.

Research has shown that when patients are treated by nurses with these degrees, their experience of care improves as a result of optimal care. Additionally, more nursing professionals are pursuing leadership ambitions because the current laws allow them to work in leadership roles. Furthermore, more NPs are taking advantage of the existing education opportunities to further their education so that they can fit within the healthcare that is embracing informatics, and evidence-based practice (EBP).

The Role of the Nurse in leading Change

Nursing role is critical when it comes to leading change, and one way in which they can exercise this mandate is monitoring the implementation of the NASEM-based recommendations to ensure there is alignment. For instance, they may examine hospitals’ compliance with the SOP regulations to ensure that they conform to these regulations (Friberg & Creasia, 2019). Additionally, they lead change by using their experience, gained from practice, to guide the adoption of the changes.

The Role of the State-based Action Coalitions

When it comes to driving change, SBACs play a vital role considering that they work collectively to bring the desired changes. They are particularly involved in mobilization of the agencies including healthcare organizations to effect change. The input of the SBACs is critical as far as the implementation of the proposed change is concerned because they provide insights to help guide the implementation (Reid et al., 2019).

How the State-Based Action Coalitions help advance the Goals specified in the National Academy of Science Report

The involvement of the SBACs is necessary to advance the goals specified in NASEM report. One of the fundamental roles of these coalitions is that provide support needed during the implementation of the NASEM’s proposed goals. This support comes in different forms including giving advice on how to execute the objectives stipulated in the report. For instance, they can recommend the strategies states can use to ensure they move away from the tradition system where nurse SOP is limited to where the nurse has a full freedom to practice (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017).

The Two Initiatives which my State-Based Action Coalition is working on and how they advance the Nursing Profession

Currently, my state is working on two initiatives; expanding the nurse SOP and improving nurse leadership roles. As part of its work on the former initiative, the SBAC is working on a law that would remove restrictions for nurses who want to practice to the full extent of their knowledge, experience and academic qualification. Conversely, it is working on expanding the number of nurse-led healthcare facilities as part of the strategy increasing the number of nursing professionals in leadership roles.

Barriers to Advancement that currently exist in my State and how Nursing Advocate in my State Overcome the Barriers

In my state, nurses grapple with lack of access to the mentorship, which makes it difficult for them to pursue leadership roles. Often when one wants to become a leader, they learn from others or work under a mentee. For nurses in my state, getting someone to provide the necessary mentorship is a major problem that seems to discourage some of them from pursuing leadership roles. To overcome this barrier, nursing advocate may call for the enactment of a policy that mandates organizations to provide mentorship opportunities to nurses.

Conclusion

In conclusion, some of the new trends witnessed within the healthcare system include expanding nurse roles and responsibilities. To fit adapt to the emerging trends, nurses need to advance their education, and increase their competency especially in leadership. Most importantly, nurses should be ready to put to action the proposals made by the NASEM, by expressing willingness to become leaders. They can also work in collaboration with SBACs to ensure the implementation of the NASEM’s proposals succeeds.
