Media Relations and Pros and Cons of Journalism
For an organization, having a centralized and focused media relations offers various benefits. For instance, using this kind of media relations is important in the sense that it gives an organization more control over the information or the image that one communicates about a subject or a topic of interest. This is because a centralized leadership is responsible for making decisions on what a third-party reporters report on. Another benefit that a firm can accrue from this model of relations is the fast execution of decisions. Only a few numbers of individual leaders make decisions, and this minimizes the decision-making issues that tend to arise in a setting where multiple individuals discuss solutions and measures for communicating what can attract the attention of the public (Allan, 2014). Because of the reduced chances of occurrence of conflicts at the decision-making level, there is constant communication of the information, and this ensures that the public constantly receive news.
Although working with the press can provide various benefits to an individual, it can also be disadvantageous. It gives one the opportunity to experience the world, and this particularly applies when one has to go out in the field to get what to report on. It also presents an opportunity for one to meet and learn from others including people who have managed to make succeed in different sectors, and this knowledge can help one improve one’s focus (Volkmer & Sharif, 2018). However, this kind of work can be stressful considering that in some instances, one has to move as they search what to report about. This kind of job can be risky, and reporting on certain sensitive subjects such as illegal activities can make a journalist the target of criminals (Andreotti & ProQuest [Firm] 2015).
