Expert Answer and Explanation
Advocacy Through Legislation
Problem
In no more than 250 words, describe the problem, who is affected, and the current ramifications. Explain the consequences if the issue continues. |
||
The main healthcare concern in my community is mental health. Cases of mental health problems have increased in my community, especially since covid-19 infection was declared a pandemic. Pfefferbaum and North (2020) note that covid-19 pandemic has increased the number of individuals with mental health issue because of its impact on economy and healthcare sector. Many people have lost their loved ones to the pandemic, and as a result, they have developed severe stress, depression, and anxiety (Usher et al., 2020). Mental health has mostly impacted people with financial problems and have lost their jobs. Individuals who have lost their loved ones to the pandemic are also risk developing mental health problems. Currently, people with mental problems due to the pandemic experience fear, anxiety, depression, and are sad. If the situation is one solved, these individuals have higher chances of committing suicide or lose their mind totally.
Idea for Addressing Solution
In no more than 250 words, outline your idea for addressing the issue and explain why legislation is the best course for advocacy. |
||
Mental health problem experienced in my community can be addressed by improving access to mental health care services in the community. Most of the people with mental problem in the community hardly access mental health care. () note that one of the ways of addressing mental health problems is to provide access to mental care services to mental health patients and the entire community. Access to mental health care services can be improved through making the services affordable by reducing the cost of mental care and improving the number of health facilities providing mental care services. The affordability of mental health care services can only be achieved through healthcare policy.
Research the Issue
Perform research and compile information for your idea. Present substantive evidence-based findings that support your idea for addressing the problem (studies, research, and reports). Include any similar legislation introduced or passed in other states. |
||
Evidence 1 | Various studies support solving mental health problems by improving accessibility and affordability of mental care services. A study by Fazel and Betancourt (2018) shows that mental health problems can be prevented by increasing the number of community resources that can be used to fight the menace. If community resources are increased, people will have easy time accessing mental health at achievable costs. Fazel and Betancourt (2018) note that relevant bodies should develop policies aimed at increasing resources used to provide mental health care services.
Evidence 2 | The World Health Organization (2017) hosted a workshop where various world leaders and experts in mental health talked about global mental health problem and how it can be prevented. The WHO recommended that mental health problems can be prevented by improving access to mental health services. The organization found that most mental health problems often occur because of lack of resources to handle their mental health.
Stakeholder Support
Discuss the stakeholders who would support the proposed idea and explain why they would be in support. |
||
Stakeholder(s) Supporting 1 | The first stakeholder who would support the idea are my community members and their families. Community members will most likely support the proposed idea because it advocates for their mental health. Most of people in my community cannot access mental health care because current of the high cost of care and small number of mental health facilities within the community. Hence, if an opportunity presents where they get mental health services at affordable cost, they will definitely support it. Overall, the first and key supporter for the proposed idea are the community members and their families.
Stakeholder(s) Supporting 2 | The second stakeholder who can support the proposed idea is the American Mental Health Counselors Association. The association was developed to provide license to mental health professionals and set standards for provision of mental health care services. This association will support the proposed idea because one of this aims is to provide quality and safe mental health care services to patients and their families. The association cannot achieve its aim if mental health is not accessible to patients and their families. Hence, it will support the idea so that it can achieve its goals.
Stakeholder Opposition
Discuss the stakeholders who would oppose the proposed idea. Explain why they would be in opposition and how you would prepare to debate or converse about these considerations. |
||
Stakeholder(s) Opposed 1 | The proposed idea can be opposed by the local government leadership. For the proposed idea to be implemented, the local government together with the federal government must provide funds to support it. The leaders can oppose the idea because they do not want to use funds in mental health or personal gains.
Stakeholder(s) Opposed 2 | The second stakeholder who can oppose the proposed idea are the insurance companies. The proposed idea is aimed to improve access to mental health care services by compromising the current healthcare insurance policies regarding mental health. The organizations can oppose the idea because it has potential to negatively impact their profits.
Financial Incentives/Costs
In no more than 250 words, summarize the financial impact for the issue and the idea (added costs, cost savings, increased revenue, etc.). Provided support. |
||
Mental health problems have adverse impacts of finance and economy if not solved. People with mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and many more hardly go to work, hence are bound to experience financial challenges. Kupfer et al. (2016) note that depression can affect one’s mood, make them feel down and unable to attend social events. Depression can also impact one’s concentration and prevent them from engaging in daily activities including work. Mental health problems also impact economy of people involved through medical bills (Doran & Kinchin, 2019). Treating mental problems might be slightly expensive, considering that the disorders take time to health. The proposed idea can improve financial status of community members by helping them solve mental health problems. The proposed idea can also cut cost of the current mental care services.
Legislature: Information Needed and Process for Proposal
Discuss the how to advocate for your proposal using legislation. Include the following: |
||
Provide the name and complete contact information for the legislator. | Proposed policies can only enter the legislature through legislators, such as the senators and house representatives. The legislature who will help introduce the bill to the New Jersey Senate is Michael L. Testa Jr. (R). His complete contact information is School House Office Park, 211 S. Main Street, Suite 104, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. His official phone number is (609) 778-2012.
Describe the steps for how you would present this to your legislator. | My first step to present the proposed policy to the legislature is writing the policy proposal and support it with research. Second I will find witnesses who will help me convince the legislator that the proposed idea is worth pursuing and is supported by his electors. The next step is scheduling an appointment with the legislature to speak to him about the policy. Lastly, I will avail myself during the appointment and present my case to the legislator and urge him to support the policy and introduce it to the legislature as a bill.
Outline the process if your legislator chooses to introduce your idea as a bill to congress. | The first step is drafting the bill and naming himself as the sponsor (National Human Genome Research Institute, n.d). If the representative cannot draft a bill, he will seek the help of a policy advisor. The second step is introducing the bill to the floor of the house. The bill will be introduced in the senate because the legislator is a senator. The third step is referring the bill to the responsible committee. In this case, the bill will be submitted to health committee (NHGRI, n.d). Fourth, the bill will be referred to the health subcommittee by the committee for further and more precise review. Fifth, the committee will make changes to the bill as recommended by the subcommittee and introduce it to the floor. Sixth, the bill will be debated further in the floor and vote taken (NHGRI, n.d). If it passes, it will be referred to the other house for further debate and voting. If it passes the other house, the bill will be sent to the governor who will sign it into law.
Christian Principles and Nursing Advocacy
In no more than 250 words, discuss how principles of a Christian worldview lend support to legislative advocacy in health care without bias. Be specific as to how these principles help advocate for inclusiveness and positive health outcomes for all populations, including those more vulnerable, without regard to gender, sexual orientation, culture, race, religion/belief, etc.
|
||
Christian worldview is vital element in healthcare advocacy projects. According to Proverbs 31: 8-9, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” In this instance, my community is in need of accessible and affordable mental health care services. Therefore, nurses advocating for the proposed idea are doing God’s work by speaking for members of the community. According to the book of Isaiah 1: 17, Christians are supposed to speak justice for the unjust. Isaiah also says that Christians should let justice flow in society like a river. Advocating for accessible and affordable mental health care services for members of society is one of the ways of ensuring social justice (Morgan, 2017). In summary, advocacy is a form of Christian principle of justice.
Another Christian principle is love. Christians are required to show love to their neighbors. Advocating for better mental health care services for community members is one way of showing love. Nurses should show love to their patients regardless of their sex, social class, culture, gender, race, or religion. If nurses push for accessible and affordable care services to the whole community, they would have shown love to vulnerable people. When advocating for patients, nurses should observe the Christian principles of common good, solidarity, human dignity, and equality. |
